Jean Fleischmann founded the Fleischmann company of the same name in 1887 and began producing tin toys in the following years. In 1910, the company took part in the World Exhibition in Brussels and received a gold medal for the high quality of its toys.

In 1938, the first model railways and steam engines were added to the product range through the takeover of Doll & Co. At the same time, the company began to develop its own railway models in gauge 0. In the following years, Fleischmann was able to record various successes, such as being the first European manufacturer to launch a two-wire direct current model railway in gauge 0.

In 2008 Fleischmann became a member of Modelleisenbahn Holding GmbH and together with Roco became the successful sibling in the model railway scene. The merger led to the innovation of the Z21, a model railway control system like that of a locomotive driver.
