An exciting chapter in Saarbrücken’s city history. Michael Koblischka presents around 160 mostly unpublished photographs that impressively document the eventful history of the Saarbrücker Klein- und Straßenbahn AG. From its beginnings in 1913 to the cessation of operations in 1960, the volume offers a fascinating insight into the development of local public transport in Saarbrücken.
Starting with the founding of the Saarbrücker Kleinbahn AG in 1913, which initially only operated a short route from the main train station to St. Johanner Marktstrasse, the network was continually expanded over the years until it finally covered the entire city. One of the most important milestones in the history of Saarbrücker Klein- und Straßenbahn AG was the electrification of the network in the 1920s. This allowed the trains to operate faster and more efficiently.
During the Second World War, the Saarbrücker Klein- und Straßenbahn AG was severely affected and many routes and vehicles were destroyed. After the war, an extensive reconstruction program began that restarted operations. But in the 1950s, the decline of the tram in Saarbrücken began, due to increasing competition from motorized private transport.
Michael Koblischka's volume offers a fascinating journey through time through the history of public transport in Saarbrücken. A must for anyone interested in the history of Saarbrücken local transport.
