In 1989, Freight Wagons Volume 2, Covered Wagons, Special Designs, was published, containing eleven pages on bulk goods wagons, exclusively DB models. Apart from one elaborate conversion with numerous brass castings, there was nothing else.
37 years later, there are not only numerous mass-produced models, but also a wealth of information on the development of bulk goods wagons. This began around 100 years ago with the first wagons for coal dust and soda. After the Second World War, cement became one of the most important commodities in both East and West Germany until, from the 1960s onward, large quantities of chemical products and plastic granules were added.
Just as interesting as the development of the industry is the evolution of bulk freight wagons: from two- and three-axle wagons with two upright containers, through wagons with hydraulically tilting containers, to bogie wagons with horizontal containers and multiple discharge hoppers, now predominantly made of aluminum.
Unlike the previous books, model making plays a significant role in this book and will be given greater prominence in future publications.
On 192 pages, the three authors, with the support of renowned model builders, present bulk freight wagons and their applications using approximately 550 photographs and over 40 drawings and facsimiles. The range extends from wagons dating back to the 1920s, through those built for the DB and DR (German Federal Railways), to privately owned wagons.
