Model: OO gauge DC. The diesel locomotive Ruston & Hornsby 88DS 0-4-0 No. 20 BR is manufactured by Hornby. With a gauge of 16.5 mm (gauge 00) and a length of 90 mm, it is a 1:76 scale model of a diesel locomotive. The locomotive has a motor, NEM 362 coupler pockets and English hook couplers. However, it is not equipped with light. The digital interface is NEM 652 8-pin. The locomotive comes from Great Britain and belongs to Era 7.

Ruston & Hornsby Ltd. was formed in 1918 through the merger of Ruston, Proctor & Co. Ltd. and Richard Hornsby & Sons Ltd. founded. The company's first narrow gauge diesel locomotive left the works in 1931. Production later moved to the larger Boultham Works where Ruston & Hornsby became the largest manufacturer of diesel locomotives in Britain with over 6,500 diesel locomotives built. The Ruston & Hornsby 88DS model was a more powerful version of the company's 44/48HP locomotives. With its own 4VPB engine which gave 80BHP (later replaced by the improved 4VPH engine which produced 88BHP) the loco was particularly powerful. In order to start the locomotive, however, compressed air had to be injected into the cylinders. As well as the primary motorisation, the locomotive also featured an additional 1½HP 'Donkey' motor which could top up the compressed air reserves when the locomotive was idle for long periods. The weight of the locomotive could be adjusted as required and was either 17 tons or 20 tons.

In 1941, Ruston & Hornsby changed the locomotive designations, with the 80/88HP becoming the 88DS. Externally, the changes were mainly limited to the driver's cab. Production of the 88DS locomotives ended in November 1967 after a total of 271 units had been built. Ruston 432478 was delivered to British Railways' North Eastern Region Civil Engineers Department in January 1959. It has been used for shunting work at various locations including the Leeman Road Permanent Way Stockyard in York.
