Prototype: Bachmann Europe Plc, together with GB Railfreight, is releasing a scale model of the Class 69 diesel locomotive No. 69013 to raise funds for the men's health organization Andy's Man Club. Since April 2025, the real locomotive has been sporting a special black livery with logos and the hashtag #itsokaytotalk. The goal is to raise £13,000 through the sale of the model. Because the prototype has a unique design, a faithful reproduction of the model would require new, expensive tools – which would prevent a meaningful donation. Therefore, the locomotive is being reproduced without these special features in the model.
The Class 69 diesel locomotive was developed by GB Railfreight (GBRf) to meet the growing demand for high-performance locomotives, as new Class 66 locomotives were no longer available. For this purpose, GBRf had retired Class 56 locomotives converted into similarly powerful vehicles using new components, including EMD 710 engines. The conversions were carried out by Progress Rail in Stoke-on-Trent, based on locomotives manufactured in Britain and Romania. The project was announced in spring 2019, and the first locomotive (No. 69001) entered service in 2021 after certification. Initially, ten locomotives were ordered, with an option for six more. The first ten locomotives (Nos. 69001–69010) were in service at the beginning of 2024. The entire fleet of 16 locomotives remained in service until mid-2025, including No. 69013, which appeared in a special black livery for Andy's Man Club. The locomotives received various liveries—from standard GBRf designs to retro BR color schemes—and some were given names with symbolic significance.
