Prototype: The introduction of the Class 66 in the late 1990s was one of the most significant developments in British rail freight transport since the privatization of British Rail in 1994. The railway company EWS (English, Welsh & Scottish Railways), founded by Wisconsin Central, ordered a total of 250 locomotives from General Motors (EMD) in 1996. The locomotives were based on the proven Class 59, but with new technology and a more modern drive system.
The first Class 66 arrived in the United Kingdom in 1998, prompting other operators such as Freightliner, GB Railfreight, and DRS to order their own locomotives. Production continued for almost two decades until the end of 2015, with a total of 480 units manufactured for the British market.
Starting in 2004, revised, "low-emission" variants with modified designs (including five doors) were produced due to new emissions standards. Ultimately, stricter environmental regulations led to the cessation of production in 2016, with the last locomotive, No. 66779, symbolically named "Evening Star."
The Class 66, also known as the "Shed," continues to dominate freight traffic: in 2020, it operated 87% of daily freight services. Despite the end of production, it remains a central component of the British railway landscape, increasingly supplemented by used vehicles from home and abroad.
