Model: OO gauge DC. 'Locomotion' No. 1 exemplified early innovation in the utilization of motive power on British railways. The Stockton & Darlington Railway commissioned the locomotive in 1824 from the pioneering railway engineers, Robert Stephenson & Company, in Newcastle, where it was constructed as an 0-4-0 locomotive in 1825. Initially, four engines were ordered, including 'Locomotion'. The fifth engine, featuring a different design, was completed in 1827. Originally nicknamed 'Active', it was referred to as such until the summer of 1833, when it was renamed 'Locomotion'. The locomotive was officially numbered in 1827.
On September 27th, 1825, 'Locomotion' made its historic debut at the opening of the first public railway, the S&DR. Driven by George Stephenson, it pulled eleven wagons of coal, the 'Experiment' carriage, and twenty passenger-filled wagons, marking a world-first achievement. After its inaugural run on the S&DR, 'Locomotion' continued to operate as a mineral locomotive until its retirement from service in 1841.
Recognizing its significance, it was decided to preserve 'Locomotion' for future generations. In 1857, the locomotive underwent restoration at Shildon Works to restore its original appearance. It was subsequently displayed at North Road Station in Darlington. 'Locomotion' toured various locations worldwide and was exhibited in cities such as Chicago and Paris. During its journey to Chicago in 1883, it acquired a bell inscribed with “Stockton & Darlington Railway”. The locomotive was also showcased in Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, York, Manchester, London, Darlington, and Shildon. In 1892, 'Locomotion' was relocated to Darlington's Bank Top station. Further restoration work was carried out on the locomotive at Darlington Works in 1924 and 1961.
For most of its preserved existence, 'Locomotion' was housed at the Head of Steam Museum in Darlington. It was later moved to the Locomotion Museum in Shildon, where it remains today. An agreement with Darlington Borough Council stipulated that 'Locomotion' would be exhibited for six months at the Head of Steam in the first half of 2025, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the S&DR.
This model of 'Locomotion' No. 1 reflects its preserved condition, featuring the 1883 bell, single chimney, coal detailing in the tender, and green etched nameplates bearing 'Locomotion'. A wood grain print is utilized to replicate the locomotive's wooden boiler barrel. This model is DCC-ready and compatible Next 18-Pin decoder.
