The LNER Gresley A4 is one of Britain's most iconic express locomotives. Its streamlined body is a classic symbol of the attitude towards speed and design in the 1930s, when railroads faced increasing competition from road and air transport. The LNER board knew that travel between major cities needed to be faster, more comfortable and more reliable.
Nigel Gresley, LNER's Chief Mechanical Officer, toured Germany on the Flieger Hamburger diesel locomotive and was impressed by its streamlined shape, although he knew it was only efficient at high speeds. Gresley was certain that a modified, streamlined A3 Pacific could haul heavier loads than other locomotives at equal or higher speeds, and a series of tests were conducted to confirm the A3's suitability.
Following the successful completion of testing, LNER's Board of Directors gave Gresley the go-ahead for the development of the 'Silver Jubilee' streamlined trains, the first of the new streamlined A4s. The A4's streamlined steam cycle, higher boiler pressure and increased combustion chamber made them more efficient than the A3, using less coal and water - especially later when they were also fitted with a Kylchap twin chimney. This further improved their free-steam performance.
Their streamlined design not only allowed for high speeds, but also produced rising smoke that obstructed the driver's view - a major problem for the new Class A4 engines. It is rumored that during wind tunnel testing, after several unsuccessful attempts to clear the smoke, a thumbprint was accidentally left on the clay model just behind the chimney. This allowed the smoke to be removed and incorporated into the final design.

4464 Bittern was rolled out of the Doncaster shed where she was built on 18 December 1937 and entered LNER service shortly thereafter. The locomotive was renumbered from BR to 60019 after being renumbered to 19 as part of the 1946 LNER renumbering plan. Bittern was withdrawn on 5 September 1966 and was intended for the scrapyard, but was selected for preservation after it was discovered that the originally selected 60024 Kingfisher was experiencing hearth problems. Bittern was officially listed as a historical monument on September 12, 1966. Bittern is currently in the One:One collection at Margate awaiting an overhaul which will take place once 60532 and 70000 are back on the main line. In ongoing preservation, Bittern carried the identities of a few retired classmates such as 2509 Silver Link and 4492 Dominion of New Zealand.

Hornby Dublo A4 models feature a die-cast body, just like their original Hornby Dublo counterparts. This is coupled with an enchanted decoration which combined with the shell's die-casting gives the case a realistic finish. The models contain a 5 pole motor with flywheel and are DCC capable with an 8 pole socket. These models also include a detail pocket with etched nameplates and headers, allowing the model to be displayed as it would have appeared at the Great Gathering.
