Model: OO gauge DC. Diesel locomotive Class 47/0 D1922 of British Railways.

Prototype: Towards the end of the 1950s, British Railways began planning a new diesel locomotive fleet. After evaluating various prototypes, BR decided in February 1961 to order 20 locomotives from Brush Engineering. The resulting design developed into the legendary “Brush Type 4” diesel locomotive – a practical, versatile construction with a very distinctive cab. Powered by a Sulzer engine and originally equipped with an output of 2,750 hp, the locomotive reached a top speed of 75 mph (approx. 120 km/h) with a tractive effort of 55,000 lbf (approx. 245 kN). Construction began in January 1962; the first locomotive (No. D1500) was completed at the end of September of the same year and carried out test runs in the London Midland and Western regions. The design was a success, so BR ordered a total of 512 examples. Production continued until early 1967 and resulted in the largest single class of mainline diesel locomotives in the United Kingdom.

Over time, various variants were created in which speed and tractive effort were increased to 95 mph (approx. 153 km/h) and 62,000 lbf (approx. 276 kN) respectively. While the locomotives were originally equipped with four-character headcode displays, these were later replaced by simple headlights; in the late 1980s, high-intensity headlights and roof antennas were also added. Further modifications included the installation of various steam heating boilers for older BR passenger coaches, which were later replaced by electric train heating for modern rolling stock. The numbering system began with four digits, but was changed to five digits with the introduction of the TOPS classification system; the locomotives were classified as Class 47 diesel locomotives, with sub-variants such as 47/0, 47/2, 47/3, 47/4 and 47/7. By the end of the 1990s, half of the Class 47 fleet had been withdrawn or scrapped; 33 locomotives were rebuilt as Class 57, and some were preserved as museum locomotives, including the original No. D1500, which now carries the number 47401.
