Prototype: The DB diesel locomotive range of types from the 1950s had a gap between the 1,100 hp V100 and the twin-engine V200, which the Federal Railroad filled with the single-engine V160 from 1960. In order to achieve the desired maximum axle load of only 18.5 t, consistent lightweight construction was necessary. Nine of the ten pre-series machines, affectionately known as Lollo because of the conspicuous rounding of the front sides after the Italian film actress Gina Lollobrigida, were handed over to the DB in August 1960. The tenth received an angular forehead that was inexpensive to manufacture, but by keeping the frame it made for a less than attractive appearance. The V160s, which were built in series from 1964, then had a continuous frame and have shaped the image of DB mainline diesel locomotives ever since. The Daimler-Benz type MB 839 Bb (later MTU MB16 V 652 TB) was chosen as the drive motor. The 1900 hp sixteen-cylinder unit had a turbocharger and charge air cooling and accelerated the V160 to 120 km / h. Since the Federal Railroad did not see the necessity of equipping all V160s with multiple traction and push-pull control, these facilities were only installed in V160 026-035, 083-104, 130-169 and 185-199. You can safely send your ESU models over the system by push-pull train. The V160s proved to be very reliable right from the start and were used before freight, passenger and even express trains. The four-axle vehicles were also expected to be able to transport passenger trains, for which the stronger and faster V200 was intended. In freight transport, for example, the locomotives had to prove themselves as replacements for failed steam 44s. When in 1977 the last of the heavy five-couplers left the DB and new 218s were delivered at the same time, the number of 216 in the Ruhr area was increased and the locomotives were increasingly used in freight traffic.
ESU has existed for over 25 years and is only known to most model railroaders because of its innovative digital technology (decoder and system control), but since 2012 also because of suitable, innovative and realistic implementations of locomotives, passenger cars and freight cars.
The digital center ECoS, LokPilot 5, LokSound 5 and the Nano decoders are the distance horses in the ESU range. Modellbahn Union also cooperates very closely with ESU and has already had exclusive sound models implemented for its own products as well as remaining stock. At the same time, further exclusive models in the rolling area are sought, as well as close cooperation in the implementation of Modellbahn Union's own products.
