On locomotive side 2, a 2-pin coupling is plugged into the standard shaft as an electrical connection to express train car 1. All cars have indirect LED interior lighting installed as standard, dimmable and digitally switchable via decoder in the control car. With buffer capacitors to bridge short dead spots. Role model: Not all travel is the same. Anyone who uses local transport simply wants to get to their destination quickly. The situation is different for long-distance journeys. Especially if you are traveling as a business traveler. The railways have always made offers to this wealthy public. The TEE concept was groundbreaking here. But in the end this also turned out to be no longer up to date, because after the introduction of the 2nd carriage class, the capacity utilization of the trains also increased. So DB AG thought about a new product for a target group that wanted to travel comfortably between large cities. An independent company, Metropolitan Express Train GmbH, was founded for this purpose. The new train impressed with its extremely luxurious ambience, which was designed to meet the diverse needs of its customers. Cell phone calls were strictly prohibited in the silence area. But there was also an office car in which the radio waves were even amplified.

The completely newly developed cars ran extremely smoothly even at a cruising speed of 200 km/h. Instead of plastic cladding, solid wooden furnishings dominated. Of course, the high-quality leather seats and the fold-out or permanently installed wooden tables were adjustable. In addition, there was a power socket at every seat. The wall paneling was made of Swiss pear wood.

The Metropolitan was launched on August 1, 1999 with such luxury. Of course, the two locomotives 101 130 and 131 were also designed in keeping with the new spirit. They also showed the new logo and the elegant silver paint. Their top speed was increased to 220 km/h for the Metropolitan. The two trains ran between Hamburg and Cologne. They clearly stood out from the monotony of Bahn AG. In every sense. From the very beginning, tickets could be booked online. Despite diligent efforts and some discount campaigns, it was not possible to bring the capacity utilization into the profit zone, which brought the train out of business in December 2004. Initially the cars were supposed to be parked, but fortunately they thought better of it and used them in IC traffic, although no longer in their pretty silver. The cars were then taken out of service in December 2021. A remarkable chapter of German travel culture came to an end.
Variations of this product
In 2009 Märklin celebrated its 150th anniversary. However, from an initially quite wide range of toys, the product range concentrated over time on the manufacture of electric railways in different gauges. The excellent quality of the products made the name Märklin synonymous with model railways worldwide. Even today, the material metal is an essential element in the manufacture of locomotives, which thereby gain additional value in addition to their proverbial reliability and performance.

Märklin H0: The majority of Märklin products are manufactured in this gauge on a scale of 1:87. Due to the high operational reliability of the Märklin H0 three-wire alternating current system, Märklin has contributed to making this gauge the most widely used in the world. All Märklin H0 locomotives have been digitally controllable as standard since 2000.

Märklin Z-gauge: Model railway enthusiasts do not only opt for Z-gauge on a scale of 1:220 when space is limited. In Europe Märklin is the only large-scale manufacturer of Z-gauge, which appeals not only to passionate layout builders but also to collectors.
