Prototype: The abbreviation CIWL stands for the "Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits", the oldest company to operate sleeping and dining cars as well as luxury trains. In the 1960s, the CIWL gradually replaced its existing fleet of Pullman wagons, which were now technically outdated, with contemporary wagon types. In 1971, the cars used in international traffic were leased or sold to many European railway administrations, including the Deutsche Bundesbahn. This did not change the use of the wagons, they continued to be managed by the CIWL.
