Model: HO scale. The VW "Kübelwagen" also ensures civilian driving fun 55 years ago, the VW 181 entered the automotive stage and rolled out in large numbers into Bundeswehr barracks and into the vehicle halls of the fire department, THW and DRK. It's hard to believe that individual VW 181s still remain in the vehicle halls ready for use because the emergency services don't want to part with their grateful veteran. Other emergency vehicles have now been decommissioned and, like the Wiking model, provide civilian driving fun. The VW Type 181 has long since become a legend in the USA, a leisure car just for fun. His name in the States: The Thing! The would-be off-road vehicle had neither all-wheel drive nor off-road capabilities, not to mention the expected ground clearance. When the VW 181 was presented at the IAA in 1969, its automotive vocation was initially purely military in nature. The European countries actually wanted to build a Jeep counterpart together in the 1960s, but the project was in its infancy. Meanwhile, the Bundeswehr came under pressure because production of the DKW Munga ended in 1968. VW acted and put the Type 181 on a platform frame, the VW Beetle contributed the boxer engine. Initially introduced as a "courier car", the 181 was quickly renamed the Kübelwagen in soldiers' parlance. Based on the Wehrmacht vehicle, this was - despite certain similarities - a designation not officially desired by the Bundeswehr. From 1969 to 1980, 140,768 vehicles rolled off the assembly line. Initially in Wolfsburg, then in Hanover and Emden. Most recently, the VW 181 was only used as a special-purpose vehicle in a variety of applications at the Mexico location.
Body ivory, chassis black-gray. Interior and closed hood in gray beige. Three-spoke steering wheel plugged in black. Rim with ivory hump wheel cap. VW logo, door handles and trim silver-plated. Orange indicators and red taillights at the rear.

Wiking started their first production of traffic models in Berlin. For 85 years, impressive models have been created there that are the mirror image of German automobile manufacturing. Now the Wiking range is designed and produced in south-west Germany by the Sieper Group. The range is constantly growing with new examples such as fire engine turntable ladders and passenger cars, but also current tractors as well as various classics. Not only current examples are brought out in miniature, but also forgotten models.
