The first 45XX locomotives were originally built at Stafford Road Works in Wolverhampton between 1906 and 1908 and were numbered 2161-80 (after renumbering in 1912 this became 4500-4519). These 20 locomotives were the last to be built at Stafford Road Works, all subsequent examples coming from Swindon. Swindon built four such locomotives, the last of which entered service in 1924. A total of 75 examples of the Class 45XX were built. The locomotives were particularly popular on the hilly lines in Wales and the West Country and the entire class passed into BR ownership after nationalisation in 1948. The first withdrawals were in the early 1950s, the last remaining in service until 1964. Three examples have survived.
