Prototype:
Electric locomotive class 103.1 of the German Federal Railways (DB). Version with "short" driver's cab, pantographs, front apron and buffer lining. Coloring in purple / beige. Road number 103 167-3. Located in the railway depot Munich Hbf. Operating condition from the end of August 1971 to May 1974.
Following the delivery of four Probeloks of the new E 03 series (from 1968: 103.0) in 1965, series production started in 1969 for InterCity traffic (IC 71), which started in 1971, but with a new specifications: the trailer loads of TEE- and IC trains with 200 km / h increased from 300 to 480 t and 800 t heavy D trains should still be able to be transported at 160 km / h. In the 145 series locomotives - now referred to as class 103.1 - oriented the basic design of the vehicle part with bridge frame, locomotive body of five segments and the three-axle bogies on the prototypes. Also the same head shape could be taken over by the advance locos. Outwardly most conspicuous was the doubling of the air intake openings through a second, five-part row of fan grilles in the lower half of the side walls, due to a larger supply of cooling air due to the extra power of the locomotives. With a high performance trimmed main transformer (traction endurance 6,250 kVA) and extremely "high" lightweight WBM 368 / 17f power engines with a continuous output of 1,240 kW, the power output increased by 25.3% compared to the prototypes - a total of 7,440 kW or 10,116 hp. The last thirty units (103 216-245) received a 700 mm extended frame with enlarged driver's cabs to implement the urgently needed expansion of the cramped driver's cabs. After their delivery in the years 1970 to 1974, the 103.1 immediately took over the new IC trains and of course the prestigious TEE, which were now even partially integrated into the new IC network. Initially, the series machines were equipped up to the 103 215 with two DBS 54a pantographs and Wanisch WB 15 rocker pantographs as well as upper shock absorbers. But this designed for 200 km / h special design proved in the long run and not particularly caused catenary damage both in the network of the DB and the ÖBB. The cause was assumed to be a contact pressure above the permissible 120 kN. As an interim solution, for the time being, only a partial exchange with the standard pantographs DBS 54 with standard rocker, suitable for a maximum of 160 km / h, initially remained. On the other hand, the last 30 machines (103 216-245) could be equipped ex works with the SBS 65 single-arm pantograph, which has since become ready for series production. Now, the 103 101-215 should also be equipped with these single-arm pantographs, but the industry could not deliver such a number in the short-term. Thus the DB decided for a more unconventional way and had the "old" DBS 54 or still existing DBS 54a of the first series locomotive from 1975/76 by the Einholmstromabnehmer SBS 65 of the straight in delivery, only 150 km / h fast 111 series replace , Some 103 also received the advanced SBS 67, the new design of which differed from the SBS 65 only by a greater distance of the grinding strips (400 instead of 350 mm).

Durch die große Betriebssicherheit des Märklin H0-Dreileiter-Wechselstromsystems hat Märklin mit dazu beigetragen, diese Spurweite zur am weitesten verbreiteten weltweit werden zu lassen. Schon seit dem Jahr 2000 sind alle Märklin H0-Lokomotiven serienmäßig digital steuerbar.

Märklin Spur Z: Nicht nur bei beengten Platzverhältnissen entscheiden sich Modellbahner für die Spur Z im Maßstab 1:220. In Europa ist Märklin der einzige Großserienhersteller der Spur Z, die neben passionierten Anlagenbauern auch Sammler anspricht.
